TRIGENICS THEORY AND SCIENCE
RETRAIN THE BRAIN THROUGH SYNERGY AND NEUROSUMMATION
TRIGENICS THERAPEUTIC NEUROSUMMATION
The concept of neuroplasticity has emerged to the forefront of modern science and is the topic of continual research in many areas of health including manual therapies. Neuroplasticity, also known as brain plasticity, refers to changes in neural pathways and synapses which are due to changes in behavior, environment and neural processes, as well as changes resulting from bodily injury. Since the inception of Trigenics Functional Muscle Neurology in the early 1980's by the Founder Dr. Allan Oolo Austin, the founding principle has always been that the application of three effective and researched treatment techniques simultaneously together at once has a much greater synergistic effect on the nervous system than if only applying one by itself.
It is hypothesized that it is the result of these simultaneously applied elements and their sub-elements that creates an overload accentuated bombardment of reflexive sensorimotor input that instantly resets the way the brain sends contraction messages to the muscles and tendons. Dr. Oolo Austin has aptly defined this cumulative effect on the part of the nervous system which controls movement as "Therapeutic Neurosummation®". This is the cornerstone of Trigenics. It is what enables the rapid and dramatic neuroplastic results seen in Trigenics to occur that are otherwise not attainable when applied on their own.
THE 3 COMPONENTS OF TRIGENICS
1. RESISTED EXERCISE NEUROLOGY ("Neurogenics").
The patient performs exercise movements which are resisted either by the doctor/therapist or with the use of devices or equipment. (Devices are available which measure applied muscle force.) These force-specific resisted movement patterns are designed to cause augmented firing of reflex nerve impulses from the muscles to the brain. ("Myoneural'). f exercise equipment is used, different loads are used for different muscles and body types.
2. MUSCLE NERVE-SENSOR TREATMENT ("Myogenics").
The doctor/therapist directly treats the muscles, tendons or ligaments with deformative traction or vibratory techniques in such a way as to stimulate increased firing of the the nerve-sensors ("mechanoreceptors") which monitor movement and feeling. The treatment is applied by the doctor/therapist using their hands or a variety of treatment devices. This type of soft tissue treatment also causes augmented firing of up-going impulses to the brain.
3. FOCUSED BREATHING BIOFEEDBACK ("Autogenics") .
The patient is required to perform concentrative focused breathing (essentially a diaphragmic or parasympathetic breath) while the doctor/therapist provides verbal feedback as to how the patient can enhance the neurological effect of their movements so as to enhance the treatment response and outcome. Neurologists refer to this therapeutic procedural concept as "biofeedback".
TRIGENICS TREATMENT AND TRAINING PROCEDURES
After completing the Trigenics strength and length testing procedures and plotting the results on the Trigenics Myoneuro Kinetic Assessment chart, there are two major treatment or training applications that are applied based on whether a muscle needs to be strengthened (facilitated) or lengthened neurologically. Simply, these are referred to as strengthening or lengthening procedures. In the Registered Trigenics Practitioner (RTP) program these procedures are referred to as TS and TL, and in the Certified Trigenics Trainer (CTT) program they are referred to as TSr and TLr procedures where the r stands for Recalibration.
TS and TSr - TRIGENICS STRENGTHENING & RECALIBRATION PROCEDURES - these procedures are designed to facilitate an increased number and velocity of nerve sensor signalling to and from the brain and muscle/tendons/ligaments (sensori-motor).
TL and TLr - TRIGENICS LENGTHENING & RECALIBRATION PROCEDURES - these procedures are designed to decrease the over stimulation of nerve sensor signalling from the brain to the muscles/tendons/ligaments and restore them to their natural resting tone and tension length.
Each procedure also has an ultimate effect on the pain signalling to and from the brain which makes Trigenics a very effective treatment and training approach for many conditions such as neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder conditions such as shoulder impingement, rotator cuff tendonosis, elbow epicondylosis, muscular hip impingements, hip pain, knee pain, chondromalasia patella, patella femoral syndrome, ankle sprains, plantar fascitiis, temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction and many other chronic conditions.
